I was bumped on my flight from SFO to HNL last Friday so I thought I'd post a few tips on how NOT to get bumped. If you don't have a seat on your boarding pass/ticket you can get bumped. Airlines oversell/overbook these flights consistently for a number of reasons, some are due to other delays, and some because it's cheaper economically to put the people up over the day than fly a plane half full.

Tips for Not Getting Bumped
1. Check In As Early As Possible. If you can check in online great. If you're on a connecting flight you're already checked in at the beginning of the trip.

2. Be a Frequent Flier. Register and get the miles.

3. Check your luggage. You're less likely to be bumped if you're luggage is already on the plane.

4. Don't expect that you're Travelocity Roaming Gnome will help. They're just a reseller. They guarantee essentially the same thing as the airline anyway. Their tech support in India is worthless.

5. Don't book the last flight of the day, it's more likely to be overbooked with people missing or delayed from earlier flights.

Now, if you do get bumped.

Write down everyone's name, including the supervisor. They will try to put you on the very next flight, sometimes this is actually a worse, and longer flight with connections and other delays. Don't take it. Request first class on the next good/direct flight out.

You're also entitled to a check for 2x your ticket value, up to 400$. The airline will also cover your hotel and meals for the remainder. If you complain a bit more you can get travel coupons.
